This week we were joined by Paul and Jackie Gill, and Trevor P-H which gave added flavour to the mix. Worship centred on Jesus and His love for us and we shared bread and wine, to remember His sacrifice and His promised return. We thought of the words last week about Love. Donald Barnhouse said:Love that goes upward is worship; love that goes outward is affection; love that stoops is grace! The picture is of the King stooping down to bestow favour for no deserved reason on a common person. Grace can’t be purchased, or even earned. There are no strings attached. We should not even try to repay it as to do so is insulting…….all we need to do is accept His grace by receiving the free gift of eternal life bought for us by Christ’s sacrifice (paraphrased from The grace awakening by Charles Swindoll). Paul also read a clipping that he had in his bible about Love. I can’t remember it all, but I remember it was about our attitude to others, it said that we show love to others by valuing and encouraging them. (Perhaps Paul will email it back to us all?). We also talked again about the idea of prayer being likened to sun-bathing or slipping into a warm bath and letting the love of God wash over us. We did a bit of “SON bathing” and Hilary brought words of an old song about letting “the love of God enfold us”. We prayed that we would spend time with Him so that we were changed and people would notice the difference! We continued studying in Acts from Chapter 16 - noted that Paul had to compromise his beliefs to satisfy Jewish believers. Religious pressure is a powerful thing! Poor Timothy lost his foreskin as a result. But the result was “The churches became stronger in faith and grew larger every day” Acts 16:5 Dorinda noted that God broke Paul and the others out of prison in a different way than He had done with Peter. We remarked that God doesn’t always do things the same way, so there is little point in having set ways of doing things. We talked about the Maranatha method of body ministry, and Paul G shared his experience of a healing ministry that involved, stepping out of your shoes, as a physical expression of leaving past hurts or old self behind (or something like that, sorry if I wasn’t listening properly?). Methods of doing Christian stuff are good but we can’t manipulate God by our religious practices - He simply isn’t impressed! Robin hit he nail when he said, “We need to listen to the Holy Spirit to guide us”. We noted that in v10 the “they” became “we” in the narrative indicating that Luke, the author had joined Paul at this point. Paul (Gill, not of Tarsus) noted that the people were incredibly violent in Macedonia always ready for a rumble and not averse to using sticks and stones. The word going out had a massive impact wherever they went. People either accepted or reject the good news totally! Rome was still in charge and so it was perhaps not surprising there was violence and cruelty as the norm in society at the time. (Have things changed that much?). Paul (of Tarsus) said Romans 7:24 “Who will rescue me from this body of death?” Paul was referring to the Roman practice of tying a dead person to a murderer until the decaying carcass infected the individual and he died. He was comparing this “body of death” to our old sin nature which we still carry around with us, that makes us do the things we don’t want to do. The answer?……….”Thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord” Rom7:25.Hilary noted that Paul stood up for his rights when he and the team were beaten and thrown into prison without trial. Perhaps we should be prepared to stand up to social injustice? We concluded in prayer for all the stuff happening in Bere Alston (& Tavistock) at the moment. Get involved in the week of prayer, the carnival, yoof work, single parents work, and anything else God sends our way, but don’t forget to Son bathe from time to time. He loves you!If you got this far –WELL DONE! You are rewarded by a week off as next Monday we share in a BBQ (weather permitting) bring some food, drink etc to Ian & Gill’s at 6pm onwards. Tues HG are invited.Love you all, T (Holy x)
